The region and how to get here.
Crete, the biggest Greek island and the fifth biggest in theMediterranean, fascinates the travellers not only with the incomparable beauty of the Cretan landscape, but also with thethousands of years the history of the island counts. The island of Zeus, Talus, Minoas, Daedalus and Minotaur has a special place in Greek Mythology and in Greek history as well, as the fights for independence mark almost every page of the history of the island until its union with Greece on 1st December 1913.
The island is considered to be populated in 8.000 B.C or earlier, period in which the rock paintings discovered in a cave near the village Asfendou in Sfakia are dated. They are considered to be the earliest cave paintings in the island. Since then, the inhabitancy is constant. The minoan civilization thrived here having the city of Knossos as its centre.
The island suffered many invasions and many conquerors. Dorians, Romans, Arabs, Venetians, Turks even Egyptians. The personality of Eleytherios Venizelos, who came from Crete, marks the modern history of the island, as he achieved the union of the island with the rest of Greece.
Crete played a decisive role to the outcome of the World War IIas well, with the renowned "Battle of Crete".
The island has 4 prefectures. The prefecture of Lasithi is the eastest one. Its main city is Agios Nikolaos. On the south of the prefecture, in the Libyan Sea, "Makrigialos", once a picturesque village of fishermen, is now a developing tourist resort.
